Project - Koskkonong
Project: Koskkonong
County: Dane
Acres to Restore: 10

The Koskkonong project is located along Koskkonong Creek. The project area lies within a heavily drained area where three landowners are interested in restoring the wetland.

Koskkonong Creek has been straightened and deepened extensively. The project area is located along a portion of the creek that has been modified. A spoil bank isolates the ditch/creek from the adjacent wetlands. A pond was dug in the riverine wetlands many years ago. This provides some open water area but is too deep to support any emergent vegetation suitable for wildlife.

Trying to reconnect the creek with the wetland area will be goal of this project. Restoring the hydrology so basins do not artificially drain and Koskkonong Creek can interact with the wetland as it historically did. Sediment will be removed from the wetland area trying to match the original elevation and topography of the site. This will allow water to move through the site as it historically did and allow the wetland and creek to function as a system instead of independently.

This site is located off CTY BB about 6 miles east of Cottage Grove. The site is just north of the intersection of CTY BB and the Koskonong River.
